This is a new and better kind of quick page! The good part is that the background and the border layer are in two separate files so you can resize each one to fit your layout. Whether you scrap in a square or a rectangle, you can size the pieces without distortion.

This particular border was offered as Day 3 of the Digitals Birthday Bash Train Blog, so if you missed that day, now's your chance to get it. I plan on offering all the large borders that were formerly blog train freebies, so if you missed any keep an eye out for them at my Digitals store. Each layered quick page will include one background and one "bizzie border."

I am really excited about this new idea. For several years I scrapped at the 8.5x11 size page and there weren't nearly as many quick page options at that size. This new idea will make the elements much more versatile since you can resize to fit any size page you use, even brag book size.

POLL QUESTION: Would you like a new kind of quick page?

As I've been working on the blog freebies for Digitals birthday bash, I've had an epiphany. LOL. I started thinking about quick pages and how they are usually made in a particular size, such as 12x12, 8x8, or 8.5x11, or 10x8, etc. About the only one that can really be reduced with no distortion at all is the 12x12 to an 8x8. But what about if I made these full-page borders I've been giving away AND included a background in a separate JPEG, but with the border download. That would make it possible for you to make your page any size you want, drag the background onto your document, then pull the border onto your page and size it to fit. Does that make sense? It makes total sense to me. Doing it this way allows you to use a photo as your background instead of a standard background which give a very different look to your layout.

I'd love for you to answer the poll to the left and let me know what you think.

Fun kits for kids' everyday activities

These kits are a couple of my favorites. They were inspired by my granddaughters, Sydney and Lindsey, when they were a little bit younger. They would load up their Red Flyer wagon with stuffed animals and dolls and off they'd go. With Mommy's help they might tie the wagon to their Red Flyer tricycle. A couple of years ago the girls and their friends organized a 4th of July parade in their neighborhood. They made flags and streamers for their bicycles, wagons and scooters and rode around the neighborhood (with parents close behind).

October Scripture Wordart is Now Available

My daughter and her husband have a little pond in the field behind their house. Their girls and my other grandkids love to go fishing back there. They are as excited to catch a little bluegill as they would be to catch a big ole bass. Their fishing expeditions to the pond was the inspiration for this kit (Hook, Line & Sinker).

So, here's my first little teaser for you. You get a background, a worn wooden frame and a fishing pole. Hopefully you won't be able to live without the whole kit. LOL. But, I hope you enjoy these whimsical elements even if you don't need the whole kit.

Rough Around the Edges + Freebie

I have a new kit in my Digitals store. It's called Rough Around the Edges and it is a totally masculine kit. But having said that, I was able to use the kit for pictures of two of my granddaughters and my kitty (he's masculine LOL). So, it is a very versatile kit. If you know my style of design you know that I love denim and this kit has lots of denim backgrounds.

If you like flip-flops, summer and swimming, then you are going to love this album. Believe it or not, these quick pages in the shape of flip-flops can be quite versatile. You can use it as a hybrid album . . . use a pair of real flip-flops as the front and back cover . . . use the front and back cover provided . . . or use these quick pages in your regular scrapbook pages. Scroll down to check out the sample album I made as a gift to my granddaughter's little friend, Riley. She had an aloha swimming birthday party. For their party favors the little girls decorated their own pair of flip-flops. Riley's party was actually the inspiration for this album. I used the photos from Riley's party for the sample album, which I will give to Riley.

Have you met my Aunt Dorie?

Aunt Dorie was my mother's oldest sister. A kinder, sweeter woman never lived. She was a strong Christian woman who raised her two children alone after her husband died young. Some of my fondest childhood memories are spending the night with Aunt Dorie and being allowed to sleep in her big comfy feather bed. Sometimes we don't realize what a big impact a person has had on our life until we are adults with a family of our own. This was the case with my Aunt Dorie. These kits are my small way of saying, "Thanks, Aunt Dorie, I love you."

My series "From the Attic" was designed especially for heritage photos (here and here), but I've also done layouts with these kits using current-day photos (here and here). These kits were my first attempt at heritage kits and I love them. But I might be a bit biased. LOL.

The two November pages also use elements from my kit "Fall Harvest Party." I live in Indiana and we like to tell people that there's more than corn in Indiana. But, to be honest, there is an awful lot of corn! LOL. So, a fall kit wouldn't be complete without some some stalks of corn. Here in the U.S. November is a time for Thanksgiving to celebrate our bountiful harvest. But since corn may not be a big deal where you come from, I've also given you a blank page you can use for November or for any additional page.

My youngest son, Damon, was the inspiration for my Ruggedly Handsome kits. I had pictures of Damon taken on his first Father's Day. He had on a cowboy hat and was playing on the slip-n-slide with the kids. His own baby son was too little to play on the slip-n-slide, but he sure did enjoy watching his Daddy being silly. When I was looking for a theme for a masculine kit, the photos of my son immediately came to mind.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are using a PC/Windows you may see one or two extra files in this download. I just got a new computer (woo-hoo!) and the compression (zip) program I usually use did not get installed from my old computer. So, I'm using the compression program that came with my new Mac computer. This program puts some Mac files in the download that PC users will not be able to open. That's okay, they are not files you need. You should be able to open the five files included in this download (2 pages, 1 header, 1 preview and 1 TOU). If you have any problem in the download, please email me so I will have your return email address. But if you see extra files besides the five and you can't open the extra files, don't be concerned.

One of my most popular series has been "The Most Wonderful Place on Earth" series. My daughter and her family LOVE Disney World and I've been with them several times. That means we have a lot of photos with the Disney characters and princesses. That's how the idea for these kits came about . . . I wanted to scrap them digitally yet I wanted elements that really went with the pictures. I have about 16 kits in this series, so pull up a seat, have a cup of coffee and wander through that part of my store. A visit to Disney World wouldn't be complete without going to Animal Kingdom. I designed Sibby's Safari Adventure exactly for this purpose. My granddaughter, Sydney, was a site to behold when we went on our first safari trip through Animal Kingdom. It was more fun watching her face as she saw the animals than it was to see the animals for myself. LOL.

Even though the above preview says it's Day 7, it really is Day 8! Sorry for the confusion, I forgot to change the day on the preview.

We're moving right along with our 12 days of Christmas in July and the blog express is speeding down the track. Today's download is for the month of August. Where I live August is very hot and humid. The only flowers still alive in my yard are the most hardy of flowers, such as the marigolds. So that's the flower I've used on the August page, the hardy marigold. The elements used in these pages are from my Summer Gold kit. As with all of my daily downloads, I've given you a plain page in case your seasons don't match mine. ;-) (This link has now been disabled.)

My First Haircut

You know that first haircut for your little one can be a traumatic experience for Mommy and the little one. He's not sure why he's been put up in that strange chair and there's someone coming at him with scissors. You know when he comes down from the chair he's going to look like a little kid instead of your baby. You will definitely want to save the memories of the "before" and "after" photos. There's no better way to do that than with my kit First Haircut or with the First Haircut Quick Pages.

If the answer to that question is "yes," then you need to have a kit worthy of your little princess. My kit "An Everyday Princess" and the add-on kit both have a lot of unique elements that you won't find anywhere else. Not only would the kit be perfect for pics of your little girl playing princess dress-up, but there are also birthday elements and Easter basket elements. I've used this kit for layouts of my youngest granddaughter, Chloe, when she was tiny . . . it's great for baby girl page layouts.

I designed this kit to go with the teams who played in the biggest football game of the year. You know the one . . . where everyone gathers in front of the big-screen TV, eats a lot of junk food and yells for their favorite team. If you are a fan of the "patriotic" team or of the "gigantic" team this kit was created with you in mind. I bet you could even find a way to use it for your little football gal or guy. Free Photo Book from new personal photo book company "Inkubook"

I received an email from an old college friend who now works for a new company that produces personal photo books.

Here is the email I received from my friend:

Inkubook, the company I started working with in December, publicly launched our site today. It’s a site dedicated to helping people make personal photo books. If you've ever made a book from someplace like Shutterfly, Picaboo, Blurb, or My Publisher, then this is the same idea. It’s done entirely online. It integrates with Flickr, so if you store photos there you can pull them right into your book. And a really nice feature is that you can invite other people to upload photos or text to your book project so that you can use them in your book (for example, if you've gone on a family vacation, you can easily get photos that other people took without having to email back and forth).

Kits to help you get your kids' school pictures in albums

School's out, summer's here, what better time to get those school photo into albums the kids can really enjoy looking at. There is a set of 12 quick pages that all you had to do is drop your photos behind, do some journaling and you're done! But if you'd rather create your own pages, my two kits "Miss Binzer's Backpack" and "Sibby Goes to Kindergarten" can be used over and over and mixed in together for some wonderful school layout pages.

How do I use these pages?

I've had a few questions about how you are supposed to use these pages I'm offering during the Polar Express Blog Train. Do I need to buy the physical album? Or, can I just use these pages? Since I'm a very simple person myself, I'm going to give very simple directions.

These particular pages I'm giving away were made to be used with the Cosmo Cricket "Jack" Album, which is sold at Digitals. This is a physical album you purchase and then Stacey will mail you the album. If you purchase the album during our 12 days of Christmas sale (through July 25) you can get this six-page album for only $3.80.

You use these pages just like you would use any quick page of any size. If you are going to print your pages on your home printer, you can get two pages on one 8.5x11 sheet of photo paper. I personally create a document 8.5x11 then pull my little quick page onto the new document. Then I drop the photos I want to use behind the QP. Add any journaling you want as you would with any other page. Then I pull another little QP onto the document and add the photos I want behind that page. I crop the photos so nothing is "hanging out" from behind the QP. This is not really necessary since you will cut out around the page anyway. But for me it helps me to see how the page is really going to look once I cut it out.

Once you have the two little QPs and pictures set up on the 8.5x11 document, just print it out like any other scrapbook page you might print at home.

Next step is to cut out around the pages and adhere each page to the physical album. A lot of hybrid scrappers like to add real elements, like buttons or ribbons to some or all of the pages. But the pages are "finished" looking whether you add physical elements or not.

Once you have printed all your pages and adhered them to the physical album pages, clip them all together with the binder ring that comes with the album. Then, if you want, you can tie a piece of ribbon or bow of some sort to the binder ring.

All that is left to do is to sit back while all your friends and family "oohs" and "ahhs" over this cute little album you've created! LOL.

My "Everyday Hybrid" Jack Album

If you like the shape of this little album and would like to do another one, I have a denim set of pages you might just have to have! I love denim and tend to use it a lot in my own albums. This particular set of pages is purposely made very plain so you can add as many or as few real elements to the pages as you want. Even though I mostly used real elements like buttons and ribbon on my album, I have included some digital elements you can add to your pages if you want.

To display my album I purchased an ornament hanger from the Michael's craft store. It's the perfect size and looks so cute on my living room photo table.

Day 5 (May) of the Polar Express Blog Train

The May page for the blog train is one of my favorite pages in this album and uses elements from my kit "Ladybug Garden." I love seeing a field of daisies. There's just something so wholesome and refreshing about daisies. This bouquet of daisies has a little ladybug snuggled in the petals and is tied up neatly with a black and white dotted bow. As with the other downloads you also get a "plain" page to use anyway you like . . . either as a coordinating page for a two-page spread or instead of the decorated page altogether.

A few months back I was fortunate enough to be a contributing designer for a book written by Lori J. Davis and Sally Beacham, Picture Yourself Creating Digital Scrapbooks. I just wanted to take a moment here to show you the two kits of mine that are exclusive to that book. I was so pleased with the little tricycle and wagon that I made for the "Let's Play!" kit that I made a similar one for sale at Digitals (Patriotic Kids). I bet you have some photos of your kids or grandkids at play that would go perfectly with one of these kits.

The "Long Ago Love" kit was designed at the request of one of the authors to go with an old colorized wedding photo she had. The soft colors in that kit would be great for any heritage photos.

I have to admit that when I heard everyone talking about these little chipboard/blackboard albums I couldn't understand what the hullabaloo was all about. What do you do with them? Why do you want to go back to using paper and punches and glue when scrapping digitally is SO easy? Because these little albums are just so cute! That's why. LOL. It's a great way to mix digital and paper scrapping (hybrid) and have a lot of fun doing it. Okay, so what do you DO with the album when you're done? You give them as gifts, you display them in your home, you enjoy them. I display the one I made by hanging it on an ornament holder which can be purchased at any craft store.

I just uploaded a new set of blackboard album pages to Digitals which will be perfect to help you try your hand at making one of these little albums. The pages are all denim, made very simply so you can add all the "real" elements you want, anywhere on the page you want. And what a price, only $3.00! Just in case you want to add some digital elements to the page, I've included a few in the kit. For the album I made, I used the denim quick pages, dropped my photos behind the transparent opening, then printed them. After cutting out around the page I glued the page to the blackboard scrapbook page, being careful to put plenty of glue on the edge of the photo page. Then I got out some of my paper punches from my paper scrapping days. I pulled out my stash of buttons and ribbons and started playing. Give it a try. From someone who just couldn't see the point, I'm telling you they are fun to make!

Movie Review with kids in mind

A couple of weeks ago, my six year-old wanted to see Iron Man. I knew it was a PG-13 and felt uneasy about taking her. So, I googled "movie review kids." I discovered Kids-In-Mind, a website that rates movies in three categories -- sex & nudity, violence and profanity.

Each category is rated 1 (least) to 10 (most). For Indiana Jones, the rating is 1.7.4-- translated low sex & nudity, high violence and medium profanity. Base on the number 7, I would be worried about the language, but the site describes everything they find objectionable.

Here is the description of the profanity description for Indiana Jones:

13 scatalogical terms, 13 mild obscenties, names calling (greaser, ruskey, crazy, crazy old man), several exclamations (shut up), 5 religious terms.

Getting back to Iron Man -- because I found this site and read the descriptions of the movie, I didn't take my girls. Even though the movie is a comic book movie (which made me put it in the category of Spider Man, Super Man), the movie is an adult movie with, in my opinion, a lot of sexual content. I would have been really upset if my girls been sitting next to me during one particular scene, but because I found this site and did my homework, embarrassment was averted and innocence was maintained.

A firetrail, a Wii and a 37 year-old shoulder

I haven't been able to do much on the blog lately. I injured my shoulder a couple of weeks ago, and sitting at the computer with my hands on the mouse or keyboards aggravates my "injury."

Our school had a work day -- we were building a trail through woods on the school's property. The work day was scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. I didn't remember until approximately 11:30. My girls and I show up with a rake thinking I would rake for an hour. No. I was handed a tool I don't even know how to use. Now, I don't do a lot of manual labor. But, at the time, I thought I will only be here for an hour. How bad can it be?

I was later told by the DNR guy that I was effectively building a fire trail. After 30 minutes, I was still feeling good. After 45 minutes, my back was hurting, but I wasn't going to stop until I was done.

By the time I got home, I couldn't move. Only the birth of my two little girls, hurt more than my shoulder. I couldn't do anything to get comfortable, I really thought my arm was going to fall off. Luckily, my friend is a physical therapist who worked on my shoulder several times. After four days, several massages, ice and heat, and a lot of Naproxen, I started to feel better.

I tell you all of that to tell you this -- I think the Wii is a dangerous toy for those over 21. My daughter got a Wii for her birthday. I had forgotten about my "injury." So, I thought it was a great idea to do the boxing game on the Wii. I fought my nine year-old, my nephew, and my husband (I am undefeated by the way), and within minutes my arm was ready to fall off again. I was out of commission for another week.

I can be on the computer for short amounts of time at this point so I hope to be able to get back on track with my blog soon.

Ednie's Early Risers from Glenda's My Hometown series

When Glenda created this kit, she was going name it something lame like "Early Spring." I immediately thought of Grandma Etta's neighbors. I had heard Grandma tell the story of Ed and Ednie and the tulips and thought calling it Ednie's Early Risers would be hilarious. My mom (Glenda) was trying to be classy or something because she didn't think it was "proper." With five bazillion flower kits out there, what better way to make your flower kit stand out?

Any way, here is Glenda's backstory on Ednie's Early Risers. You will never look at a tulip the same way again....

As with most small towns in America, my hometown had its share of characters. Eddie and Ednie were two such characters and were our next door neighbors. Ednie was a fastidious housekeeper. Her front porch was cleaner than most people’s houses. She could be seen out sweeping the front porch and the path leading up to her house at least once, sometimes twice a day. She was well known in our little ‘burg for her cleaning habits.

Her husband, Eddie, on the other hand, was known for other reasons. Eddie liked to take a drink every now and then. Well okay, let’s be honest. Eddie liked a drink quite often. His fondness for drinking wasn’t talked about all that much, it was just a matter of fact. I do remember one particular morning in early spring. My mother was standing at the kitchen window looking toward Ednie and Eddie’s house as the rest of us were eating. Mother said in a very nonchalant tone, “Well, lookey there, Ednie’s tulips are coming up really early this spring.” After a cold hard winter, we were all ready for any sign of coming spring. We got up to look out at the tulips we thought were just peeking through the cold ground. Instead, what we saw was Eddie rising up from the tulip bed after a night of drinking.

I never see a tulip blooming in the spring but what I think of our neighbors, Ednie and Eddie . . . real characters from my hometown. So, this kit is dedicated to them, the daffodils, the hydrangeas and especially the tulips. I hope you enjoy using the kit as much as I enjoyed making it. I love the look of an old wooden window box full of colorful flowers. The little bouquets remind me of the times my kids have picked a small bouquet for me . . . the first of the flowers to bloom in the spring . . . when you really didn’t want the kid to pick them, but you smile and say, “Why, thank you, what a beautiful bouquet! Now, let’s not pick anymore, okay?”

Scrapville is on Spring Break

I am going to be gone for Spring Break, so there won't be much going on in Scrapville. We have a house sitter to take care of our kitties, but she didn't want to be the honorary mayor of Scrapville, in addition to her kitty duties.

I plan to change the header when I get back with Florida pics. I know you will be waiting on pins and needles to see it;) Anyway, I put up two polls with questions ( at left) that will help us in planning activities, specials, etc. If you have a minute or two, give us your opinion.

Because we know those who visited with Sally at the convention are new to digiscrapping, I am going to go over a few digiscrapping terms.

1. TOU (Terms of Use) -- every kit, quick page, etc. should have a TOU somewhere in the download. This is an agreement between you, the purchaser, and the designer. By downloading the digital file, you agree to all points in the TOU. Digital files are for personal use only, unless it is marked and sold as a commercial use file. You can not share digital files you have purchased or downloaded as a freebie with anyone. You may direct others to a link so that they can download the file and agree to the Designer's TOU. Just because you received something free, doesn't mean that you can give/share it with others. That is copyright infringement.

2. Gallery -- a place at a digital scrapbooking website where you post your LOs. Click here for my gallery at Digitals.

3. LO (Layout) -- after creating a layout, you can go to digital scrapbooking site. I recommend Digitals at www.digitalscrapbookpages.com/galleria where you can post your LO for others to view. You can view layouts by others to get ideas, and it is fun to show off your beautiful children, cats, dogs, horses, boyfriends, etc. You can leave comments on others' LOs, as well as receive comments on your work.

4. Digital Scrapping Websites -- there are many out there, but like I said, I recommend Digitals. The owners are very helpful, I have always found members to be helpful and positive. In order to make a purchase, you will have to join the site, but that just means having a user name and password. You won't be bombarded with emails unless you want to be on the site's mailing list (you will then receive notice of sales, freebies, contests, etc.) Most digitals scrapping site do require you to get a username/password to do anything other than just browse.

5. Forum -- at first, I found this a very confusing place. It is a place on a digital scrapping site where you can browse or ask questions based on a particular topic. For example, I loaded the new Adobe Photoshop Elements, but had a question. I can get on the forum, find a category where my question will fit and ask away. Usually, someone will respond within a day or two. The responder could be the owner of the site, a designer, or a member. It is a great place to get and give great information. This is where you will find out about monthly contests where the prizes are always great digital elements.

If you have a question, never be afraid to contact the designer or the store owner via email or through a private message or through the forum. Designers are just women sitting at their computer in their bathrobe like everybody else. If they can help you with a question, then they can probably count on you as a loyal customer. So, in reality, they are indebted to you. :)

I am COLD

Sorry the blog hasn't been that exciting lately. I am cold. I have been cold since November. I am wearing a heavy coat right now as I am typing. I have never before hated the cold weather as I have this year. I have been counting down Spring Break since Thanksgiving. Just looking at Spring Break pictures warms me up (see above). The only good thing about cold weather is the possibility of school delays and no school. Maybe sledding, but then you have to actually go out into the cold...35 days until Spring Break.

On the subject of Spring Break, I highly recommend Anna Maria Island, Florida. We found a great house -- way cleaner than my own house, beautifully decorated, and it is less than a 100 steps from the beach. Been going to AMI for two years, this will be the second time we stay at this particular house. In two years, we have had only one day of rain, and temps are 78-92.

Stay warm, and bundle up. I hope to come out of hibernation around March.

My Favorite Christmas Kit (that is not my mom's:)

I bought a few Christmas kits to do my Christmas pictures...from 2004, 2005, 2006 and now 2007. Anyway, I found three really cute kits last week. I will post them as I finish a page or two with each kit. Glenda (my mom) gives me her kits to try and some of them are easier to use than others. So, ease of use is important to me. Also, price -- I don't like to pay over $6.00 for a kit. If it falls into the "I can't live without it" category, I will go higher, but that rarely happens unless I am working on a very specific project. Then, I tell my mom that she should do a kit about whatever it is I am working on, and, voila -- free kit. She falls for it every time.

This kit is Christmas Cheer by Jennifer Maceyunas, at Digitals. As I searched "Christmas" at Digitals, this kit jumped off the screen. Great colors that seem to go with all of my pics from Christmas morning. It was very easy to put together a page using her beautiful backgrounds and really cute elements. When I purchased her kit, it was on sale for $4.88, but it is normally $6.50. This is a kit, after seeing it and using it, that I would highly recommend -- even at the full price. Santa is a great guy

Santa is such a great guy.

He forgot to bring my five year-old Butterscotch Pony last year. Lindsey didn’t act as if she noticed it was missing from under the tree last Christmas, but, apparently, Lindsey has been keeping a list of her own. One with Santa’s errors in capital letters, highlighted and underlined.

Over the last year, not one word was uttered about Butterscotch Pony. Until December 15. A glum little voice said, “Good morning, Momma.” Momma said, “Good morning, Binz. What’s wrong?” Lindsey took a long, deep breath and began to tell of her year-long disappointment over not getting a $269 robot pony she would have ridden on Christmas day, and then shoved to the forbidden zone -- the toy room -- a place my girls never go because it is 1.) haunted 2.) Bigfoot lives there 3.) there is no momma or daddy in that room -- they are all the way downstairs and 4.) it is too messy. Momma said to Lindsey, “You haven’t even mentioned Butterscotch since last Christmas.” Lindsey said, “I forgot I was disappointed by Santa Claus.” She is good. Very good.

Life went on for about eight hours -- until Daddy got home from work, and Momma told him all about Binzer’s Big Christmas Disappointment of 2006. Santa Claus had to be made aware of his oversight, and, with the Christmas delivery cut-off date fast approaching, we had to get our message to him quickly. We jumped in our mini-van, and, with not a moment to spare, headed to the mall to get a meeting with Santa.

Lindsey waited patiently, and, then, as she and her sister approached the bearded one, she turned with a sly look and gave me a nod. The look was a bit “mafia-ish” so I was concerned she might punch him or give him some concrete boots for his “indiscretion,” but, in all of her curly-headedness, she jumped up on his lap and told him what she wanted for Christmas with only a gentle reminder that this was the second time she has asked for Butterscotch Pony and that they “may quit making them.” She left Santa's lap feeling assured that she would get her pony this year.

I told Lindsey that Butterscotch was very expensive and to not get her hopes up. “Santa doesn’t need money, he just makes it,” she said. Good point.

Customer relations seems to be Santa’s strong point, because on Christmas morning, he corrected his error from the year before. There were no forms to fill out, no waiting on hold to talk to the elf in charge of robot ponies. He just brought it. No questions asked.

“Look, Momma, Butterscotch. See Momma. I told you he would bring it. And you didn’t have to spend one cent,” Lindsey pointed out.

I was a little disappointed Lindsey didn’t seem more excited. But, then I realized she was just confident. When she walked into the room, she knew Butterscotch would be there. Santa really is a great guy.

Just had a fabulous idea...it pops up in paragraph #3

Since I began scrapbooking, I have used Creative Memories albums. I like all the CM stuff, but I am not obsessive about everything being CM. As I have shifted away from paper scrapping to digital, I still use CM albums, because, in my opinion, they are the best (and if they are faulty, they replace them). I had a CM party during the summer and loved the new products. CM has branched out to custom framing (my photographs I sent off look great) and digital Storybooks.
Okay, I am ridiculously "OCD" about my scrapbook pages -- paper and digital. When I was paper scrapping, it was not uncommon for me to work on a page eight, nine hours. I am not much faster doing digital pages. So, when my consultant told me about the digital Storybooks, I thought there is no way, I, the self-proclaimed Queen of overly-detailed-scrapbook-page, the Duchess of I-would-rather-be-5-years-behind-then-do-a-simple-page, could do the Storybook. But, I thought, what the heck. Let's try it. I downloaded the free software and started working at 10:30 p.m. I was finished by 12:30 a.m. I uploaded my finished book to CM's website and received my book in a week. I had completed an entire summer in two and a half hours. I had chosen simple black pages, while accenting with only colored text and heads. My bright summer pictures popped off the black pages. Very simple, very clean, very done. I was impressed with the amount of space allowed for text. Only once did I run out of space.

I tell you all that to tell you this...At the time, I wished I could print out my digital pages I have done in the CM Storybook format, but they only offer templates with limited themes. Then, I woke up at 2 a.m. one morning with a brilliant idea. I could create my ridiculously detailed digital pages (just use the Storybook specs when creating the doc) and choose the full page picture template. I could upload my ridiculously detailed digital pages and have a Storybook with my own pages.

I have seen and been told that other companies have similar products to the CM Storybook, but I can only vouch for the CM Storybook. The paper quality, print quality, etc. is exceptional. I am very picky about the color of my pics, but CM printed my book perfectly.

I have been noticing that a lot of designers aren't designing kits, so much as one or two elements packaged together that can be recolored. You can get a multi piece kit with backgrounds for $5 or get a set of bows or a bow that can be recolored for $5. What do you think? Which is the better way to go when purchasing digital scrapping supplies? How much is too much to pay for a personal use kit or element? Let me hear from you.

Having an eight year-old photographer who scraps and journals...priceless

My eight year-old has been interested in photography since she was three. She has always loved having her picture taken but getting to take pictures is even more exciting . I wasn’t always comfortable handing over my Canon 20D to a five or six year-old, so I would buy her disposable cameras. We never seemed to get the pics printed, or we would lose the camera in the deep dark hole that is the toy room.

When she was in second grade, she asked for a real digital camera for Christmas. I got her a $10 digital camera -- a 1 mega pixel. Sydney took a few pics -- four pics, which was all the camera could hold. We downloaded and opened the file and…my six year-old said that “is a really poor quality image.”

For her birthday, we broke down and got her a Fuji Film FinePix 6.3 mega pixels. I went through the rules of owning a camera -- also close the lens cover, put it back in the case when not using it, keeping an extra set of batteries charged, and keep attached to your arm while using and carrying it. Sydney has done a great job taking care of her camera, and an even greater job taking pictures. She knows how to download her files -- I help choose the destination file. In addition to being a great camera for Sydney -- durable, easy to handle -- it is handy to have around for the quickie pictures I wouldn’t have bothered to get my 20D out for.

I am most proud that she is already scrapping her pics. Every few months, we go through her picture file on our computer, and she pics out photos to print. She has the ability to choose the picture that tell the story of each event.

After printing the pictures, Sydney organizes them into her Creative Memories Pic Folio Album she got as a present. I love this album. At 11x14, it has ten opening in each spread for pictures or journaling boxes. Syd just slides her pictures in, then, uses a pre-cut set of title bars, and journaling boxes (different patterns on the front and back) to finish her spread. The journaling boxes have just enough space to tell a brief story about each page. Lines help Sydney keep her developing handwriting straight.

How to create a soft focus effect in Photoshop and Elements

Open and size your image.
Make a duplicate layer. Highlight top layer.
Go to Filter, Gaussian blur. Blur image to 15 to 19.
Go to the Layers. Change opacity of the blurred layer to 40%.
Save as jpg.
